I'm pleased that Lloyds Banking Group has listened to concerns raised by myself, customers and a cross party group of MPs by agreeing to seek the restoration of cheque deposit services at Post Offices and Banking Hubs until the end of 2030.
I was proud to support the cross-party campaign because many people across Thirsk and Malton still rely on being able to bank locally. The Banking Hub at Pickering and our local Post Offices provide an essential service for residents, small businesses, charities and community groups.
For many people- particularly older and vulnerable customers - cheques remain an important way of banking. They shouldn't have to travel long distances or post cheques when customers of other major banks can use their local Post Office.
This is a welcome step in the right direction. The priority now is for Lloyds and the Post Office to finalise their agreement so customers can once again deposit cheques locally.
