The Conservatives have forced the government into a U-turn that will protect children in Thirsk & Malton from the harms of social media. I warmly welcome the Prime Minister finally listening to the voices of brave bereaved parents, health professionals, campaigners, and children themselves.
Three times Labour MPs voted against Conservative proposals to ban social media for under-16s. Today Keir Starmer has U-turned and backed our plans.
Despite the dither and delay, I welcome the government’s U-turn on a social media ban for under-16s.
I have spoken to local schools including in Pickering and Thirsk about the very real harms social media is causing our young people. Labour tried to kick this issue into the long grass, but thanks to the hard work of campaigners they have been forced to act.
These measures will help parents and protect children here in Thirsk & Malton. Reform are not serious about this issue either – they would reverse today’s changes and repeal the Online Safety Act.
Only the Conservatives have the team and the plan to put the interests of our children first.
