I have signed a cross-party letter calling on Lloyds Banking Group to restore cheque deposit services at Post Office branches and Banking Hubs.
The letter, coordinated by fellow Yorkshire MP, Graham Stuart, has been signed by 120 MPs from across the House of Commons, including colleagues from all major political parties. Signatories include Mel Stride, Daisy Cooper, Adrian Ramsay, Jeremy Corbyn, Graham Stringer, Dave Doogan and Liz Saville Roberts.
Together, we are asking Lloyds Banking Group Chief Executive Charlie Nunn to personally review the bank’s decision so that older, vulnerable and digitally excluded customers are not left behind.
Having worked on supporting access to banking in Thirsk & Malton towns for a number of years, both through banking hubs and postal services offering banking provisions, I know how critical these facilities are in rural areas like ours.
Banking Hubs have made a real difference to communities that have lost local bank branches. They are helping to keep face-to-face banking alive for residents, small businesses, charities and community groups.
However, Lloyds remains the only major British bank that does not allow its customers to deposit cheques at Post Office branches and Banking Hubs.
I believe this is unfair to customers who still rely on cheques, particularly older residents, disabled people, small businesses, charities and community groups.
