Since Labour formed a government 454 more households in Thirsk and Malton have been forced to claim Universal Credit. I believe this is proof that Labour is failing people in our community.
Since July 2024 Keir Starmer has talked down the economy and piled higher taxes and burdensome new regulations onto businesses. As a result unemployment has jumped to 4.7 per cent which is the highest level in four years. Real wage growth has slowed to just 1.1 per cent and the number of people on payroll has fallen by over 164,000 since the Autumn Budget.
This means more families are struggling to pay bills and more people are signing onto benefits including 454 in Thirsk and Malton alone.
When the Conservatives were in government we oversaw the number of people in work increase by over 4 million. The unemployment rate almost halved from 8.0 per cent in 2010 to 4.2 per cent in June 2024 and real wages grew for thirteen months in a row.
After Labour attacked businesses with higher taxes and more regulation it was sadly inevitable that it would mean fewer opportunities in Thirsk and Malton and more people signing onto Universal Credit.
Only Conservatives understand that it is businesses that create jobs and growth not government. With more tax rises planned this Autumn to pay for Labour’s failures it will be people and businesses in Thirsk and Malton who are left paying the price.
