Three Members of Parliament have joined forces to press the Government for urgent action on the long-overdue dualling of the A64 between Hopgrove Junction and Barton-le-Willows.
In a joint letter to the Minister for Roads, Lilian Greenwood MP, local MPs, Tom Gordon MP and Sir Alec Shelbrooke MP and I emphasise the transformational benefits that upgrading this vital stretch of road would bring to communities across York and North Yorkshire.
The letter highlights how the A64 serves as a key arterial route, linking Scarborough, York, and the wider region, but has long been plagued by daily congestion, safety issues and lost economic opportunity. We argue that dualling this section is critical to improving safety, reducing journey times, and unlocking much-needed economic growth. I am working proactively with Tom Gordon MP, Sir Alec Shelbrooke MP and Mayor of York and North Yorkshire, David Skaith to ensure this essential project finally gets over the line.
We've also invited Minister Greenwood and Mayor Skaith to meet with us to discuss this further.
In the letter, we write:
“This stretch of road is a key artery for our region, linking communities from Scarborough to York and beyond. Yet for too long, it has been a source of daily congestion, safety concerns and lost economic opportunity. Residents face long and unpredictable journey times; businesses struggle with disrupted supply chains and workforce mobility; and visitors are too often deterred by traffic delays and poor connectivity.”
“The dualling of this route is not just a matter of convenience, it is a transformational project that is shovel-ready and capable of delivering tangible results: improved safety, faster travel, new investment, job creation and a stronger, more connected local economy.”
The invitation to sign was also sent to other MPs who are serviced by or are affected by issues relating to the A64, including Alison Hume MP, Luke Charters MP and Keir Mather MP who sadly either did not respond to our invitation to sign or did not wish to sign.
