Filey

It is great news that the Department for Education has set aside £820k for extra educational support for those in most need in Filey, Scarborough and Whitby. The money, distributed through the Opportunity Area Awards, will go towards providing additional curriculum activities for children and young people who might normally miss out. The DfE is now encouraging schools, colleges and other organisations involved in delivering activities which will build up confidence, teamwork and resilience to apply for grants with a view to them starting in the summer and autumn. There will also be a new literacy hub established to nurture a love of reading by applying engaging and innovative techniques to grab youngsters' attention from an early age. I think these are great initiatives. It is so important to ensure that everyone, whatever their social background, has an opportunity to make the most of themselves and these extra lessons could make all the difference.
