Rillington

Today I met with Highways England, County Councillor Janet Sanderson and local residents to discuss what can be done to improve safety at Rillington on the A64. Local residents raised three particular issues; concerns over the traffic lights by the Coach and Horses pub where heavy vehicles sometimes get stuck because of right turning vehicles and risk colliding with pedestrians when the lights change; concerns about the effectiveness of speed signs coming into the village and concerns over the safety of the pavements alongside the A64 and whether barriers should be in place to protect pedestrians, particularly those going to and from the playgroup in the village hall. Highways England said that there had been a survey done in December about traffic speeds through villages on the A64 and reported that there ‘was reasonable evidence that there is speeding in Rillington’. They promised to send me a report on what was happening, what the options are and when improvements will be carried out. I hope to see progress to improve safety in the village as soon as possible and will continue to press for a bypass in the next stage of work to upgrade the A64 once the dual carriageway to Barton Hill is underway.
