This whale, Plasticus, which is made up of a quarter of a ton of plastic equating to the amount that enters our oceans every second, arrived outside Parliament to bring to life the scale of a massive problem facing our environment.
I was therefore delighted today to add my signature to a pledge to #PassOnPlastic with Sky Ocean Rescue, showing my commitment to reduce single-use plastic consumption. I have promised to focus on reducing the use of plastic straws, plastic cutlery and other items which cause damage to the environment. I think it is hugely important that we all do our bit and I hope that others in my constituency will follow suit.
I admire the work of Sky Ocean Rescue, which was launched a year ago, to bring this important issue to our attention. It is deeply worrying that there are 5 trillion pieces of plastic in the world’s oceans, with 8 million tonnes more ending up there every year. This is why I was keen to sign because we all have a role to play in protecting our oceans and I would encourage others to do the same.
