We must tackle drug resistant infections globally

Drug Resistant Infections

It was good to see so many of my parliamentary colleagues at today’s AMR (Antimicrobial Resistance) roundtable in Westminster and I was pleased to welcome some distinguished guests such as Lord O’Neill, who chaired a review on AMR in May 2016 and the Chief Medial Officer, Professor Dame Sally Davies, via a video link. I admire the work of the Bureau of Investigative Journalism for what they have done to draw our attention to the devastating impact of AMR, especially in India and what they continue to do to promote the issue. AMR is an increasingly serious threat to global public health and it requires action from around the world. Without effective antibiotics the success of major surgery is compromised, medicines become ineffective, infections persist and spread and the cost of healthcare increases. So, it is hugely important that we continue to build on the UK’s global leadership on this very important issue and continue the momentum which has built up in the UK to tackle it. We must also support the Innovation Fund which is helping more small scale researchers with finances so that we can increase the chances of finding a solution.
