Fantastic news for Filey! The route of the world famous Tour de Yorkshire is to go through the seaside town for the very first time next year. Day Three will see cyclists go from Thirsk, through Sutton-under-Whitestonecliffe, Sutton Bank, Helmsley, Kirkbymoorside, Pickering, Ebberston and then on to Filey, in a special detour. I am delighted with this news as I have been working with its creator, Welcome to Yorkshire CEO, Sir Gary Verity, and his team for some months to make sure Filey is included in the 700k route. The Tour de Yorkshire, a direct legacy of the 2014 Tour de France, has been extended from three to four days next year from May 2nd – 6th and is expected to bring in an extra tens of millions of pounds to the regional economy. The tour is a terrific boost for North Yorkshire and next year for Filey, in particular. I’ve already had many messages from local people who are really excited about what this means for the town, not just on the day itself, when famous cyclists such as Mark Cavendish and Lizzie Deignan pass through, but also because of the positive benefits it will bring to the economy both before and after the event as the whole world can see what a beautiful place they live in. It will be a day to remember.
