Highways England has reassured Kevin Hollinrake MP and Julian Sturdy MP (York Outer) that they are determined to ‘find a solution that works’ for the A64 traffic problem. It is currently gathering evidence to show exactly what the problem is and what the best options are. It will produce a report next spring which will lay out various solutions before going out to consultation.
At the moment up to £250 million has been earmarked for the upgrade, which may include a flyover. However, both MPs believe that this will just move the pinch point from one spot to another and that the best solution would be a duel carriageway at least as far as Barton Hill.
Highways England says it has not ruled out applying for further funds next year, if the right solution costs more than has been allocated.
