Over 150 tickets were issued for a debate held last Friday to discuss the forthcoming referendum on membership of the European Union. The event took place at the Galtres Centre. Kevin Hollinrake, MP for Thirsk and Malton, put forward the case to remain and Toby Horton, the constituency’s UKIP candidate in the General Election, argued for the country to leave.
During the evening questions were taken from the audience and over the two hours various topics were discussed including immigration, trade and security. Headteacher from Easingwold School, Mr. Phil Benaiges, chaired the event.
The debate was one of several taking place across the constituency organised by Mr. Hollinrake.
“Once again I really enjoyed debating the issues with Toby Horton. There were some really interesting questions and the strength of feeling in the audience on both sides of the argument made for a lively and informative evening. I would like to thank Phil Benaiges for his participation which ensured all went smoothly, his help in chairing the event was much appreciated. I hope the audience found the debate useful and I appreciated the feedback several people gave me afterwards. The aim of these debates is to give voters the chance to hear opinions from both sides of the argument, to give out more information and to allow residents to seek answers to their concerns before polling day in June. I hope people join us again at the debate in Pickering.”
The next debate will be held at 7pm the Steam and Moorland Garden Centre, Malton Road, Pickering on the 30th May. Admission by ticket only, one ticket per email application to [email protected] Please provide your full name and address upon application. Tickets are exclusively reserved for residents who are on the Thirsk and Malton Constituency register of electors.
