Wishing the Prime Minister a speedy recovery

I am sure you will want to join me in sending my best wishes to the Prime Minister at St Thomas’ Hospital in London. This is a very worrying time for his partner, Carrie, and his whole family. You will be aware that Mr Johnson is now in intensive care and is being looked after by a superb team of doctors and nurses and we hope to have him back soon. He is as strong as an ox and the odds are very much in his favour.

The Prime Minister has asked the Foreign Secretary, Dominic Raab, who is the First Secretary of State, to deputise for him where necessary. This is a time when we all need to pull together and set aside political differences and personal ambition and I have every confidence in his ministerial team.

It is also a moment to reflect that his deadly virus can affect everyone, no matter who you are and where you live. Already more than five thousand people across the country, including some in Thirsk and Malton, have lost their lives and I would like to send my condolences to their families. This latest news should also serve as a reminder that we must absolutely follow the guidelines set out the by the Government. As we approach the Easter weekend, I would ask you please to stay at home unless you need to go out for essential shopping, daily exercise, work, if you cannot work from home, a medical need or to help the vulnerable.

Stay at home, protect the NHS and save lives. It will make all the difference:
