Last weekend I attended Heritage Day in Hunmanby which brought together local residents, visitors and organisations to celebrate the villages unique history. Centred on Hunmanby Rail Station there was an excellent display of photographs and maps reminding visitors what an important role the village has played in bringing tourism to our area since 1847.

I was delighted to attend Hunmanby Heritage Day on Saturday and was particularly impressed with the picturesque train station newly enhanced with the first tiled network map since 1910. The event highlighted the villages community spirit and reaffirmed its status as a hidden gem in North Yorkshire.

My visit follows the publication of the ‘Celebrating our Distinctive Heritage’ report commissioned jointly by York & North Yorkshire Local Enterprise Partnership and Historic England. Tourism is a critical part of the economy in Thirsk and Malton so, it is right that with the growth of the ‘staycation’ this year we do all we can to encourage visitors back to the numerous attractions across our area.
