This week I met with local council representatives as part of the Climate Coalition’s ‘The Time is Now’ campaign. Representatives from Hambleton, Ryedale and Scarborough Councils and a Friends of the Earth representative attended the meeting to discuss the work being carried out locally to combat climate change. Tackling climate change is both a top-down and bottom-up approach and it’s great to hear about what’s being done locally in North Yorkshire. The UK should be proud of being world-leading in this area but of course, there is always more to be done both at national and local level.

The ongoing work included installing more electric vehicle charging points, LED street lighting, electric vehicles and bin lifts, home energy projects, cycle to work schemes and sustainable low-income housing projects. Moreover, the Malton to Pickering cycle route has now been finished which will serve as a boost to tourism, leisure and active travel to work. Given three quarters of journeys are estimated to be less than 5km there’s even more reason to start cycling and walking. There are a number of events being ran by North Yorkshire County Council where you can recycle an old bike or get advice on bike maintenance.
