Today I met with North Yorkshire County Council Corporate Director Business and Environmental Services, David Bowe, to discuss the unacceptable levels of traffic at the Malton and Norton railway crossing. At the meeting I suggested the Council consider building a mini roundabout and zebra crossing on Welham Road.
I was joined by County Councillor, Executive Member, Highways, Don MacKenzie, and I stressed that urgent action is needed. I have had a number of calls, letters and emails from local residents and spoken to town councillors who are all frustrated by the delays and who are concerned about the potentially high level of nitrogen dioxide which, on occasion, has been recorded above the legal limit at Butcher Corner. The whole problem needs urgent attention, particularly with the number of trains increasing significantly next year. Local residents have also expressed concerns about a proposed introduction of a one-way stretch of road from the junction with Welham Road to the car park without there being a proper consultation.
Mr Bowe confirmed that NYCC would carry out a thorough study followed by a consultation before any decisions are made and that these suggestions would be included in their modelling. The modelling process should be concluded by March 2019 and I am determined to keep up the pressure to ensure that an acceptable solution is found as soon as possible.
