I recently held discussions with LINK, the UK's cash access network, following my letter raising concerns about banking and ATM provision in Helmsley, Kirby Misperton and Bedale.
In Helmsley, LINK confirmed that arrangements are underway for a replacement ATM. I stressed the importance of ensuring the new machine is operational before existing Barclays services close, to avoid any interruption in access to cash.
At Flamingo Land, Kirby Misperton, we discussed concerns about the ATM's low usage and accessibility. I've since confirmed that the machine is located in the car park, before the main entrance, and highlighted that it serves year-round residents and nearby villagers, as well as visitors.
In Bedale, LINK considers existing cash provision sufficient under its current criteria, but agreed to raise any recurring problems with ATMs breaking down or running out of cash directly with operators. I would encourage residents experiencing these issues to contact my office so they can be followed up.
We also discussed the Government's forthcoming banking review, which could provide further opportunities to improve access to face-to-face banking services in rural towns such as Bedale.
Access to cash and banking remains essential for our rural communities, and I will continue working with LINK to ensure local residents have reliable services.
