MP slams Government for 1199 fewer jobs in York & North Yorks

Starmer

Since Labour won the general election last July, official figures show there are now 1,199 fewer jobs in York & North Yorkshire – and I believe Keir Starmer and Rachel Reeves are failing working people here in Thirsk and Malton.

Across the country, unemployment has climbed to a four-year high, while the number of payrolled employees has fallen by 152,000 since Labour’s tax-raising Autumn Budget in October 2024.

At the same time, wage growth has slowed to its lowest level since 2022. Families are feeling the squeeze from higher taxes and anti-business regulations imposed by this Labour Government. Instead of focusing on jobs and growth, Labour are mired in internal squabbling and scandal. And with Reform backing higher welfare spending, I know that only the Conservatives understand that it is businesses – not government – that create jobs, drive growth, and build the strong economy we need to fund quality public services.

With people already struggling, Rachel Reeves’ further tax rises this autumn will make it even harder for families and businesses to get by.

Every Labour Government leaves office with unemployment higher than when they entered – and Keir Starmer is no different. This Labour Government has failed working people. There are fewer jobs, wages are flatlining, inflation is rising, business confidence is at record lows, and the economy is in freefall with more tax rises on the horizon.

Make no mistake: the Conservatives are the only Party with a plan to support the economy, back business, and create more opportunity for working people.
