My first job was as a milk boy, and I know first-hand the skills, confidence and experience that a young person can gain from getting into work early.
That’s why I’m backing plans to make it easier for young people to take on summer and weekend jobs, while giving businesses greater flexibility to employ them.
Too many young people are being held back by unnecessary red tape and restrictions that make it harder for businesses to give them that vital first step on the career ladder.
Early work builds confidence, teaches valuable skills and helps young people understand the habits and expectations of the workplace. Yet the proportion of 16 and 17-year-olds in education who are also working has fallen significantly over the past two decades.
I want to see more young people getting that opportunity, while supporting the local businesses that provide those first jobs. That means cutting unnecessary bureaucracy and giving employers and young people more flexibility over when they work.
