This week I signed the Holocaust Educational Trust’s Book of Commitment, pledging my support for Holocaust Memorial Day and the vital work of remembering the six million Jewish men, women, and children murdered during the Holocaust, as well as the survivors who educate young people today.
Holocaust Memorial Day marks the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau and is a time to reflect on the darkest moments of history while standing against antisemitism and all forms of prejudice. With survivor voices becoming fewer, it is our responsibility to ensure the lessons of the Holocaust are never forgotten.
Commenting on signing the Book of Commitment, I said:
"Holocaust Memorial Day is a chance for people across Thirsk & Malton to remember those who suffered during the Holocaust and to reflect on the importance of challenging antisemitism and hatred in our communities today."
Karen Pollock CBE, Chief Executive of the Holocaust Educational Trust, added:
"As Holocaust survivors sadly fade from living memory, it is up to the next generation to carry their stories forward. Remembering the past is crucial, but we must also confront antisemitism wherever it appears to prevent history from repeating itself."
