Thirsk and Malton MP, Kevin Hollinrake, has welcomed the announcement that Britain has today confirmed its intention to withdraw from the London Fisheries Convention, which will mean that the UK will decide who will fish within six to twelve miles of our coastline.

However, Mr Hollinrake said that whilst this is a first step in ensuring that we have a sustainable fishing industry for the future, there is still more that can be done to help fishermen in Filey. “This is part of a wider set of measures that should deliver more control over our fishing waters and more opportunities for both existing and new jobs, as well as businesses in the UK fishing industry’.

Mr Hollinrake is in regular contact with fishermen from Filey, who are extremely concerned about the future of their industry.

He also said that “the future of Filey gillnet fishing is in doubt owing to rules imposed by Westminster, not Brussels, and I am determined to get these rules changes to secure a permanent future for fishing in Filey.”
