I am delighted that Theresa May has announced a full inquiry into how contaminated blood transfusions infected thousands of people with hepatitis C and HIV. The contamination happened in the 1970’s and whist the government started paying compensation to those affected 25 years ago, it is right and proper that there is a full investigation. In the debate in the House of Commons, I recalled how one constituent, Richard, who was a haemophiliac was one of the first to visit my surgery with his wife when I became an MP. Richard had received hundreds of thousands of units of factor V111 when he was at a school for the physically disabled and his life has never been the same since. This week I have spoken to both Richard and another constituent, Helen, whose health has also been chronically impacted after she was infected and I admire their stoicism. However, I welcome the fact that, finally, they can have some answers to questions about what was known about the risks, whether there was a cover up, whether it was negligence or worse, straightforward incompetence.
