This summer’s Langdale Moor wildfire exposed a stark truth: rural communities often face disasters with little support. Local farmers, gamekeepers, landowners, and volunteers acted swiftly, protecting livestock, livelihoods, and homes, yet many are still left to bear the financial burden.
I have pressed the Government for a dedicated Wildfire Recovery Fund, urging fair compensation and ongoing support for those on the frontline. Moorland management, including controlled burning, is vital to prevent larger, more destructive fires - but recent Government restrictions risk making wildfires worse.
Our countryside is only as strong as the people who protect it. North Yorkshire’s communities acted with courage and common sense during Langdale Moor. Now, they need a Government that matches that spirit with real support, practical funding, and a coherent approach to wildfire risk.
This campaign will be taken directly to the Government via the Environment Secretary, and will run until the end of March - please sign the petition to show your support.
