As your MP and Shadow Secretary of State for Communities, I want to address growing concerns about the government’s initiative, led by Angela Rayner, to define Islamophobia. This vague proposal risks stifling free speech by potentially banning criticism of religious practices, such as cousin marriage or face coverings, and could even introduce blasphemy laws by the back door. It may also lead to non-crime hate incidents being recorded against individuals, creating a two-tier society with special protections for Muslims.
The consultation, initially skewed towards select activists and only broadened after legal pressure from the Free Speech Union, remains problematic. Existing laws already safeguard against racism and religious discrimination - additional definitions are unnecessary. This could alienate constituents, especially in red wall seats.
I urge you to write to your local MP (a template email/letter is below) or submit to the ongoing call for evidence to oppose this measure here.
Let’s protect open debate and ensure fairness for all.

Subject: Oppose Labour’s Islamophobia Definition Threat to Free Speech
Dear [MP's Name],
I am deeply concerned about the government’s proposed definition of Islamophobia, led by Angela Rayner, which risks chilling free speech. This vague definition could silence legitimate criticism of religious practices, such as cousin marriage or face coverings, and even introduce blasphemy laws by the back door. It may lead to non-crime hate incidents being recorded against individuals, haunting their records, and creating a two-tier society with special protections for Muslims over others.
The selective consultation process, recently broadened after legal threats from the Free Speech Union, remains flawed. Existing laws already protect against racism and religious discrimination— we don’t need this. I urge you to oppose this initiative and tell the government it’s a vote-loser, especially in red wall seats, as highlighted by Nick Timothy.
Please act to protect free expression and respond to the call for evidence against this proposal.
Yours sincerely,
